The Martins: A year of Sainthood

lzblogpost

Today we celebrate the one-year anniversary of the canonization of Sts. Louis and Zelie Martin, parents of St. Therese of Lisieux.

On Sunday, October 18, 2015, Pope Francis presided at Mass in St. Peter’s Square which included the Rite of Canonization.  On June 27, 2015 the Pope approved the canonization of Louis Martin and his wife Zélie.  It was decided that the ceremony would take place during the Synod on the Family.

It is important to note that Louis and Zélie were not canonized because they are parents of a canonized saint. The reason for canonization, as Pope Francis stated in the canonization homily, is that “The holy spouses practiced Christian service in the family, creating day by day an environment of faith and love which nurtured the vocations of their daughters.”
