Stations of the Cross: Station One

 Jesus is Condemned to Death

Station 1: Jesus is Condemned to Death

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.

Because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

The chief priests with the elders and the scribes, the whole Sanhedrin, held a council.  They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.  Pilate questioned Jesus: “Are you the king of the Jews?”  Jesus replied: “You say so.”   The chief priests accused him of many things.  Again Pilate questioned him: “Have you nothing to say?  See how many things they accuse you of.”  Jesus remained silent, so that Pilate was amazed.   Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them, and after he had Jesus scourged, handed him over to be crucified. (Mark 15: 1 – 5,15)

The kings of the earth rise up and the princes conspire together against the Lord and against his Anointed.  I will proclaim the decree of the Lord; the Lord said to me: “You are my Son; this day I  have begotten you.  Ask of me and I will give you the nations for an inheritance and the ends of the earth for your possession.”  (Psalm 2: 2 & 7-8)

Let us pray. All-powerful and eternal God, for proclaiming the truth Your Son, Jesus, is condemned to death by civil and religious authorities.  Stir up your love in our hearts so that we might be ever faithful to all that You have told us and never condemn or demean any one of Your children because of our righteousness or fear.

Amen
