Opening Prayer

Jealous God, You are angry that Solomon built temples to other gods and goddesses. Even if it was only to keep his foreign wives happy and content, You are hurt! You want my whole heart and attention, don’t You! You really are a jealous God! I’m sorry that my straying heart pursues my comfort, happiness, security and other needs, rather than You.

Do not punish me nor those who follow me. Embrace me with Your endless compassion. I need help–I’m weak! Give me the faith of the Syro-Phoenician woman, who stretched Jesus to share Your healing power beyond the chosen people. She gave new and expanded focus to his heart and ministry. Help me to trust You, and You alone. Calm the jealousy of Your heart by touching and changing mine.
