Opening Prayer

You are a God of surprises! As You call Jacob- Israel on a new adventure, so you call us to risk that we might find what we are looking for. In strange places we find peace, Lord, and know that you are always there where we least expected to find you. Fill our doubting and suspicious hearts. Continue to be with and empower us as you send us forth amid confusion to transform a world that does not understand, and even ridicules and strikes out in violence. Give us today the innocence of doves to fly beyond the cynicism which burdens our hearts. Instill in us the cleverness of snakes to negotiate the tight spaces and lay low against oppression. Make each of us an instrument of Your peace, Lord Jesus, and help us to experience peace in surprising places within and around us.
