Opening Prayer

You are the God of Surprises. You tease Abraham and Sarah with the promise of a child, and then ask them to give Isaac up. Do you send us to the edge to test our faith? Thank you for providing a substitute ram for the sacrifice. Although we are breathless that you demand such a sacrifice. We believe that Christ is the lamb you sent to replace us, so much do you love us as Parent. Your heart must have ached like Abraham. Thanks for transfiguring Your Son so that Your brilliant glory shone in him. We need that vision to transform our faith, God. Sometimes we want to just sit still and build tents and just enjoy your presence. Help us not to grope in cloudy darkness but to see your brilliant presence breaking out in the people and situations of our lives. Be our hope in the tough times of doubt, fear, insecurity, illness and powerlessness before evil. Be the God Who keeps us faithful in surprising times and ways.
