Opening Prayer

Thank you for not withdrawing Your protective word and presence, Good God, even though our constant sinfulness is an affront to You. We are weak people, Lord – we follow our insidious instincts and basic needs – we play power games because of our insecurity – our religion can be shallow – we don’t attend to the dignity of each and every one of Your creatures. Yet, You are so good and faithful. We are so ungrateful. Instead of grateful hearts transforming our attitudes and behaviors, we ask only what will You do for us today. Please don’t smash or strip us, Lord. We sincerely want to follow Jesus, but our needs and drives get in the way. You ask us to be so flexible and responsive, and we are afraid. We want a place to rest our head – and sometimes we find places not pleasing to You. Be gentle with us today, Lord, and help us be gentle with ourselves and each other.
